Sofia 2014 Gets Boost By Record Ski SeasonThe Bulgarian Ski Federation and the Sofia 2014 Bid Committee announced Friday that the 2005-2006 ski season drew record visitors to Bulgaria, which could boost Sofia’s bid for the 2014 Winter Games. Tzeko Minev, President of the Bulgarian Ski Federation said, “we are ecstatic with attendance at Bulgarian winter sports destinations. The world is recognizing the amazing snow, fantastic accommodations and warm people of Bulgaria. Sofia 2014 captures all of this”. In Bansko, where there would be alpine skiing and biathlon events should Sofia host the 2014 Games, there was a 35 per cent increase from last year’s season. More than 1000 new beds in hotel rooms and apartment houses opened in Bansko and more than 2,500 new hotel rooms and apartments in holiday villages are planned. Borovetz, where all snowboard, cross-country and ski jumping events are planned for Sofia 2014, had an increase of 10 per cent from last year. In Borovetz there were three new hotels with more than 260 rooms and eight hotels now being constructed.
