Stayed in Rila in 2007 with a group of 21. Ideal, some of us liked our sleep, some of us liked our night life so it depends of what side of the hotel your luck draws you on! If you want some peace and don't fancy a battle with hotel staff then get chatting to people on quiet half and explain your plight, they might offer to swap. Or if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Kareoke bars are so much fun. It's great for beginners and intermediate skiers and boarders as the instructors meet you outside the hotel. They are great. You will always get the odd instructor in every resort that tends to pay more attention to the pretty one but that's just men for you! My boarding instructor spent the whole week with with me and my group even though the snow was scarce (Jan 07). He took us to the ice rink in Samokov, met us on his days off and has just added me on facebook as I'm going back in 2 weeks. If you want to save money, book Half Board, and once you get bored of the food treat yourself every other day and eat at one of the great surrounding restaurants. The best restaurants pretty much surround The Rila. With everything in life, you get what you pay for, however when I did a price comparison with the same package in Tignes, France I got Ј1500 all in. Rila, I'm getting Ј480 all in, with advanced boarding lessons. Last time I took Ј150 spending money and that did me right until the return flight with an extra Saturday boarding due to 5pm transfer pick up. French resorts are getting away with Ј10 and upawards for a vodka mixer at the mo, so anything in Bulgaria has got to beat that! Take your old mobile phones, bribe the locals or instructors, enjoy yourselves. I've not had my Borovets experience beaten by any French or Italian resort and can't wait to get back there on 12th March. Don't be British and complain, just co-habit and enjoy the beautiful mountains and friendly resort. A smile goes a long way in any country, and The Rila is the best hotel for standards and location.

Stayed at the Rila with Husband and two children. Food was good generally - plenty to choose from, but a little bit disappointing for "picky" kids - generally pizza and chips most nights. Breakfast choice good - pancakes cooked fresh to order. Rooms definitely not 4* - a little bit tatty round the edges. Stayed in a studio, but the "kitchenette" is not a realistic option, so don't bargain on preparing a meal! Word of warning - the rooms facing the bars are VERY noisy at night - till 1/2am at least, so be prepared and ask for a room facing the other side of the hotel!! The hotel staff didn't smile much, and some were even rude; I can't say they went out of their way to help. The location of the hotel is fantastic - couldn't be better. Drinks in general in the hotel and the bars are expensive, so take advantage of the supermarkets for soft drinks for your days on the slopes. Best slopes are at the top of the Gondola.

Stayed at the Rila in March 08 for a family ski trip and not in a mad rush to go back there. Had 2 nights opposite the disco (so no sleep) and staff were reluctant to move us and kept showing rooms on the same side of the hotel - duh! Rep not much better, so after wrangling did get an ok room (not UK 4 star standard). Food was really good and pool nice, but that's all I can say really. Probably suit couples or singles better!

i will start with what was my first concern about staying in the hotel which was the food. well what can i say!!! An excellent choice of hotel, so much choice of good food for all meals varying from full fry up to cereal to fruit or just plain toast for breakfast and let's not forget the fresh pancakes cooked to order. the evening meal is just as varied catering for vegetarians as well as meat eaters with a choice of several main dishes and plenty of side dishes every night. the accomadation room wise is good with everything you need for the week, fresh towels and the room cleaned every day. the pool and 2 yes 2 spa's are excellent after a long day skiing with plenty of room for everyone wishing to use them. plenty of other facilities were available casino, fitness room but we ran out of time before using them. the location is excellent ,all the ski schools meet outside the rila every day so you have minimal distance to go first thing in the morning. the staff we encountered were always polite and cheerfull and willing to help. the only negative thing about the hotel i would say is the cost of drinks they are more expensive for less drink than most of the rest of the resort but then you only have to go a few steps outside and the prices drop drastically in the many available bars and resturants. overall the place is excellent we have already started booking for next year at the rila

Went to Borovets Jan-Feb 07. Stayed at HOTEL RILA. I was very impressed with the hotel as it had a few indoor shops, a small game room and a nice lobby and bar. The hotel had excellent balconies were you could view the slopes. Night-life was good. Many places to go. Would recommend going to the karaoke place - its a good laugh after a hard day of skiing. SLOPES - There are quite a good range of slopes. there is a green one which is a sort of spiral shape. good for beginners but is fairly flat so you might need to push yourself down the slope for some of it. There is also a black run which doubles as a nursery slope(the bottom of the black) and there is night-skiing which is really good! Would recommend buying a 'dustbin lid' (bought in RILA hotel in one of their small stores for 20 lev, approx 8 pounds) or toboggan. Great fun for night skiing! The resort includes 1 gondola, 2 chairlifts and several button lifts(or drag lifts) . There was plenty of snow so would give resort 5*s!!

Stayed at Rila two years ago and going again this Xmas/New Year. Top value for money. Slopes arent the best in the world but most of the skiers there arent the best in the world either so no probs . Nightlife is pretty good too.

Lovely hotel but we felt the rooms could be better equipped. There were no drawers and no wardrobe - just a small hanging rail and lots of random shelving. Also, there was an area which was set up for hair and make up, i.e. it had a desk, a stool and a light but there was no mirror. I found that frustrating and had to use the bathroom. The bathroom was also very small.

Hotel is over run with children with no adult spaces and staff do nothing to check them. Also extending no ski/boots in room on check in and out is just nonsense. Need kid free zones especially mealtimes and jacuzzis. Bar staff are surly and manager useless and rude! Chambermaids were the only ones who smiled. Boot service which is a separate company see excellent!

Оnly downside is that the water temperature of the pool was so cold that you didn't want to spend any time in it and had to go round to the sauna to warm up. it was the same 2 years ago.

      1. While other guests are loud you can hear it in your room - not soundproof.
      2. During evenings there is not a lot to do in the hotel - missing shows

I would certainly book with yourselves if travelling again
Your driver who did the airport transfer was polite, tidy and punctual with a decent standard vehicle
Hotel has under gone a refurb to a certain extent and this has improved the facilities

down side that there was no kettle in the room to make a hot drink, but one was provided immediately when asked which remain in our room through out our stay, unfortunately not cups, mugs were provided so had to take cardboard cups from hotel bar and cups available and too small for any practical use.
THIS WOULD NOT STOP ME FROM MAKING ANOTHER BOOKING, i'd take some mugs.

I think the waiting staff were under pressure as there didn't seem to be enough of them and the restaurant got very busy.
But on the whole a very pleasurable stay.
