Sent on 23 January 2012I stayed at Samokov in March 2011 and am going back this year. Food was fine, there was a good choice and no need to eat elsewhere. The restaurant opened late for new arrivals whereby the previous year(different hotel) we were given a sandwhich and fruit - so this was appreciated. Staff were helpful and rooms were warm with plenty of hot water.I won't comment on decor as it has been mentioned in other reviews but more important for me was the cleanliness which i could not fault. The upgraded spa facilities were excellent and the 2 massages i had were the best i have had -very courteous and professional staff. For the price paid i am happy with a dated hotel and could not get the same facilities elsewhere in Europe for double the price. -

Sent on 02 January 2010I just returned from the Samokov hotel after a weeks stay and I was pleasantly surprised. I read many reviews b4 I went, about this Hotel being cold and not having hot water. This was most definately not the situation. The rooms were always roasting and there was hot water all day everyday. The rooms were nice and clean and serviced everyday. there was a bit of a problem with the bath leaking but it was just a bit of water on the floor that was dried every morning by the cleaners. No big deal. The food however was not spectacular.we had half board which was our breakfast and evening meal. a bowl of cereal and a few slices of bread was about all I was willing to try as the rest of it looked somewhat suspect. the same with the evening meals. I will mention however that the food was always warm contrary to previous reviews. There are many steak houses and other restaurants to pick from in the resort and I highly recommend the Titanic bar. You couldn't wish to meet more friendly and polite staff and the owner Nikolaiy is a top man. If you are with a group in the ski school George is the best instructor in town.Without doubt. Even the other Instructors were saying so. He is an absolute Gentleman and made are holiday. He is very patient and very very funny. He was always willing to go out of his way to help us were other instructors looked like they couldn't wait to get rid of them. He also took us out around the town to show us were the best places to eat were and took us on walks when the skiing was cancelled. Tip your Instructors well folks they deserve it. Unfortunately for us the snow conditions were not great. the temperatures were quite high and it only snowed once the whole week . The snow machines can only work from about -4 degrees C as well so they can't guarantee snow for the slopes, but nobody can control the weather so there was nobody to blame for that. If your in doing any shopping prices are pretty much negotiable on all clothes and stuff if you can be bothered bartering but the prices are pretty cheap as it is. The Bulgarian people themselves are all very friendly and love having a laugh with the tourists. All in all it was an enjoyable trip and I would definately go back again. -

Sent on 08 March 2009Sue, thought your comments were a little harsh in regard to the restaurant being filthy, it certainly is dated and a little warn out, but you are absolutely right in relation to the quality of the food it is wretched. I was surprised at the report before yours with the claims that the food is varied with some Bulgarian dishes...NO the excuse for food is inedible swill and all the clap trap about microwaves to heat your food as Bulgarians do not eat hot food is utter tosh.....if you have a choice steer clear of the Samakov and find a hotel that cares about what it feeds its guests -

Sent on 27 February 2009Our family of 6 (2 adults, 4 sons 12-21 years) have just returned from our half term holiday in Borovets, staying in the Samokov Hotel. We had 3 twin rooms, and stayed half board, with ski packages (1 experienced, 5 beginners). Even allowing for the premium that is inevitably charged for staying in school holidays, we are very pleased with the package we had, and are happy to share our experiences. The rooms were spacious enough, clean, comfortable and if anything a little better than the photographs shown on advertisements. Yes, the furnishing is a little dated, but this is evident in advance, and it is clean, sound and functional. There was always plenty of hot water on demand, and the maid service was in the main faultless. For a large and very busy hotel, the food served at breakfast and dinner was plentiful, varied and tasty. Foods offered range from traditional Bulgarian dishes, through to dishes more familiar to British palates. Faced with a wide range of food (some unfamiliar) presented out of necessity in large quantities on the buffet, no doubt some people are put off, but there is no reason for anyone to eat elsewhere as some other comments suggest. Our party included a vegetarian and a vegan, and we met a family of coeliacs, and all were happy with the food choices offered. The hotel's size and range of facilities suited our party very well, though with such good skiing conditions there was not much time left to use the swimming pool, etc. Snacks and drinks in the various bars were reasonably priced, in general a little cheaper than equivalent in the UK. Out of the hotel some bars might be cheaper, if you search around. This was our second experience of the Samokov's ski-school, having used it when staying in another local hotel last year. We always had good service from the ski-depot, and our instructors have been first rate. In the very busy half term holiday there was a hiccup with organising my husband's advanced group instructor this year, but this was resolved after a couple of days. Beginners were very well provided for. We'll be back again next year, and would have no hesitation to stay at the Samokov again. -

Sent on 22 February 2009The Samakov hotel is a hotel well past its best, it would have been something special in the dark days of communism however it needs major investment in being totally refurbished, someone has stated decor likened to the 90' probably more like the mid 70's. In fairness the hotel is kept cleaned...hats off to the cleaning staff. I have to laugh when I see the comments regarding the food on offer, it is absolutely terrible the cooked stuff is always luke warm and peoples comments about using a microwave is a joke, you simply should not have to re-heat the swill they provide. My family are not fussy but the standard of food offered is simply poor. The ski school staff are very good, but the equipment is well used. If you are booked at the Samakov take plenty of money for eating out because you are going to need it, and the restaurants outside are nearly always a rip off with equally poor food on offer. BUT do try Katies across from the Samakov excellent breakfasts for a decent price and their evening meals are good value to and tasty..well done to them they buck the trend for poor service and unedible food. I do wonder what people eat back home when I see some people saying that the food is good at the Samakov...I think that they are working for the Hotel. You can get a good holiday for skiing at Borovets, I note that First Choice have decided that for 2009 the Samakov is a three star instead of the four it stated in 2008 even three is well stretching it get the bulldozers in and level it and start again -

Sent on 18 January 2009Just come back for a weeks snowboarding at the Samakov Hotel. Overall it is a nice hotel, but it is starting to look a bit like it was decorated in the early 90's and then never touched again! The food was OK, but not anything special, and never really hot. i was surprised at how expensive things were. Expect to pay around Ј2.50 for a beer and not 80p as it always states, and when you go home be warned that the airport is more expensive than our motorway service stations, a bar of chocolate thats 40p here is Ј1.25 there. You do start to feel by the end that they just want you to part with your money as everything will cost you. -

Sent on 14 January 2009Please can you advise if we stay at your hotel, do we book the ski school package through yourselves? We are looking to book a week in early Feb 2010, and would be looking for the total price for flights from bristol, halfboard 2 adults, with skiing package included for 6 days, with instructor? Please can you advise if the ski instruction is all day or half day?
Please, post a comment on Samokov (Borovets) hotel.

Hotel facilities good, location good, cleanliness good. Staff very miserable and unhappy, in particular the restaurant staff miserable and rude.
Breakfast was poor. First 2 days coffeemachine was o.k. after that very bad quality only black coffee. Only 1 working socket in the room, nowadays everbody had a cellphone, tablett, laptop, so 2 or more should be fine.
The staff were very helpful
Hotel locations is ideal. I stayed here 5 years ago and the food is much improved. We had a good variety of food for breakfast and dinner. If you want a la carte food, pay more and stay somewhere else. Second stay at this hotel and would stay again
The hotel was in rather poor condition. My room (525) smelled mildly of sewage (or something similar) and when I reported it to the Reception Desk I was informed that all the rooms in the hotel smelt, which was certainly not the reply I was expecting! At the same time I also informed Reception that the water was continually flowing from the cistern into my toilet. She got a technician(?) to look at the problem within minutes and he did something to it, but I noticed after he had gone that the water was still running continuously, and continued to do so for the rest of my stay. The pool tables are not level - one is much worse than the other - which rather spoils the game you are trying to play. [I dare not hit the Return key to start a new paragraph as it may instead send this off to you unfinished, so it is all coming as one paragraph.] The Wi-fi in the evening was almost non-existent for hours on end, due to the number of people trying to get onto it. Cannot some better arrangement be in place - perhaps including the payment of a small fee and then to be given a password - so that all those who need it can have access to the internet at that important time? The woodwork surrounding the lock on my room door was smashed, and both the carpet and the ceiling were stained. It was curious for me to note that there were no cash tills both to record all sales which take place and also to store the money from the sales - instead, if you bought something at a bar the money either went into the member of staff's pocket, or underneath a cloth. How on earth can the management know what has been sold and how much money has been received? Anyway, I and my son enjoyed our stay in Borovets and hope to return.
Mm the rooms has little spotted lights ! Need more light in the rooms!
Excellent hotel, very close to the gondola lift.
Hotel was built in late 80's and doesnt seem to have been updated since. The communal areas are still very good but I think the hotel would benefit from a refurbishment of the rooms. I would be happy to pay more if the rooms were of a better standard.
We would have liked a bit more traditional food rather than trying to do British food. A kettle in the room would have been fantastic as we all like a cuppa as soon as we wake up.
Otherwise we all had a lovely ho;iday
Many Thanks Carol Ireland
