Vitosha
The Vitosha mountain
The Vitosha mountain is situated only 10 km far from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The mountain is good for skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer. It is easily accessible both in the winter and in the summer but its weather is very changeable.
In Vitosha there are two biosphere preserves - Bistrishko Branishte and Torfeno Branishte. The highest peak of Vitosha is Cherni Vruh (2290 m). The main skiing area is under it.
Vitosha offers excellent conditions for snow sports, with huge skiing areas and many slopes with powder, but last few years the skiing infrastructure and the hotels in the mountain were not developed according to the needs of the tourists.
It starts to snow heavy in December and it is stable till late spring. The snow cover reaches a thickness of 1.5 m. The duration of the skiing season is 120 days and the average temperature of the air is minus 6 ° C. There are good conditions for slalom and cross-country skiing, as well as for tours on foot throughout the mountain.
Concerning the hotels and chalets in the mountain, most of them are basic ones, with very limited facilities and low prices. For guests with higher requirements we recommend the hotels in Simeonovo and Dragalevtsi area of Sofia, which have better facilities and offer very reasonable prices.
How to reach Vitosha mountain
Vitosha is easily accessible by car or bus from Sofia, with several city transport lines going to different places in the mountain.
The Vitosha mountain is situated only 10 km far from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. This is the highest ski resort of Bulgaria. The mountain is good for skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer. It is easily accessible both in the winter and in the summer but its weather is very changeable.
Ski slopes on Vitosha mountain
Ski centres: There are two ski centers on Vitosha. Aleko ski centre is the oldest and the most visited one in Bulgaria, on 1800 m above the sea level. Most of the ski pistes are situated around Aleko where you can find everything - from pistes for children and ski schools to difficult ones, suitable for advanced skiers.
On ski piste Akademika, cannons for artificial snow are maintaining the snow cover and night skiing is available usually until 22:00 h.
The highest ski piste is situated under Cherni Vruh peak, serviced by a drag lift and the lower ones are situated in the forests, far away from Aleko.
The second ski center Koniarnika-Vetrovala is located on 1507 m above the sea level.
Ski runs: The ski runs of Vitosha are various and would be suitable for skiers and boarders of any level. Vitosha offers six ski runs with various difficulty and length - the green ski run being the easiest and the Vitoshko Lale the most difficult.
There is also a trail for ski running - Univerisada, 9600 m long.
Ski services: All ski runs have the necessary facilities. There are a number of chair and drag lifts, as well as a Gondola lift starting from the outskirts of Sofia and reaching almost the top of the mountain near Aleko.
The Aleko chalet offers ski for rent and highly qualified ski instructors. Over the weekends in the winter the area and the ski run near the Aleko chalet become overcrowded.
Ski rents are available near the runs or in the hotels.

Sent on 08 October 2011The first time I came for ski holiday was in 1975 with Christmas. In that time Holland International was the touroperator. We had a fantastic time in Stastlivetza and the skiing was great. Beautifull natur! That the lifts were oldfashied was a pity but all the things around, the people ski instructors we really made friends. From that time on we came every year 1 or 2 times to Vitosha until 1980. We like to go very much to go to Vitosha again but I heard Stastlivetza is not operabel anymore.I can not understand that such a nice hotel at such a beautifull place a not modernizing to the level . -

Sent on 02 January 2005Having visited Vitosha yesterday by gondola from the main station, my first impression is that it is not geared at all for the foreign tourist yet. Although it was possible to find friendly english speaking staff (all the people we came across were friendly)it was impossible for us to make any sense of the maps of the various pistes. In fact the 'you are here' marker on the map did not exist. Rubbed off?? Who knows! We had no idea where we were or where to go. Which runs were which etc. Consequently we chose to stay at the top station and just have a look around before making our descent. Must say though it looks a great place if you know your way around. We are currently living in Sofia and hope to return for a session with an English speaking guide sometime this week. We were told that it was impossible to find anyone on 1st Jan because they were all suffering from the aftermath of the night before. Weren't we all! Great to have this website. Regards.
Please, post a comment on Vitosha mountain.
We will greatly appreciate this. It will help us improve the content of this website, so other people know what they can expect.
